It all began in 1965 at the University of Florida. Its research team was tasked with developing a beverage for professional athletes that could fully and quickly replenish fluids and nutrients while preventing dehydration and heat-related issues, such as muscle cramps and heat exhaustion. The drink was tested on players from the Florida Gators professional football team, which is how it got its name, “Gatorade.”
During the 1965 season, the players, bolstered by Gatorade, experienced far fewer dehydration issues and demonstrated significantly greater stamina. Thanks to their fitness and endurance in the closing stages of games, their opponents nicknamed them “the second-half team.” They managed to win their very first title, the Orange Bowl, and, like in a fairy tale, worked their way up from the very bottom to the absolute top.
In collaboration with elite athletes, the composition of the Gatorade hydration and nutrition drink is constantly tested and refined. With a 60-year history of studying athletes, Gatorade supports the future of athletic performance and wellness by providing solutions for hydration, protein, energy, and all-day nutrition that fuel consumers, no matter how or why they sweat.
